The Lies We Borrow and the Truth We Must Reclaim

The sea has a way of revealing what we often try to ignore.

Its waves carry stories. Some are true. Others are simply echoes of lies we've borrowed along the way. With every tide, we have a choice: will we continue to let those lies wash over us, or will we anchor ourselves in what is true?

That is why we need a lighthouse.

A lighthouse doesn't calm the storm. It doesn't stop the waves or remove the danger. It simply illuminates what is real. It exposes the shoreline, warns of hidden rocks, and faithfully points us toward safe passage.

Our lives are no different.

The Holy Spirit is our Guide, the oil that keeps the lamp burning. Without His presence, our vision grows dim, and it becomes easier to mistake fear for wisdom, shame for humility, or another person's brokenness for our identity.

Throughout Scripture, oil was never meant to be neglected. In Leviticus 24:1–4, the priests were instructed to continually tend the lamps so they would burn before the Lord without ceasing. The light required intentional care. It wasn't a one-time act but a daily rhythm of returning, refilling, and remaining in God's presence.

Our hearts require the same tending.

A.W. Tozer wrote, "The whole purpose of man is to worship God and enjoy Him forever." When worship becomes our highest pursuit, truth begins to replace the lies we've carried. We stop defining ourselves by rejection, betrayal, disappointment, or fear, and begin defining ourselves by the One who created us.

In marriage, this pursuit becomes deeply personal.

Rebecca George reminds us that the way we love others gives evidence of our surrender to Christ. Love is not simply measured by words or feelings but by a life continually yielded to Him. Surrender is not weakness, it is trust. It is choosing God's way over self-protection, control, or self-preservation.

To stay the course in marriage is to recognize that every decision, every conversation, every act of forgiveness, every boundary, and every sacrifice carries responsibility. It is a sacred stewardship entrusted to two imperfect people who have chosen to pursue Christ together.

We will all borrow lies at some point.

"I am not enough."

"I am unlovable."

"If they betrayed me, I must not have been worth staying for."

"If I protect my heart, I cannot love."

But truth has a voice that speaks louder than the waves.

Truth reminds us that our identity is not determined by another person's choices. Our value is not diminished by someone else's brokenness. And our hope is not found in a perfect marriage but in a faithful God.

The lighthouse continues to shine.

The oil continues to be supplied.

The invitation to return remains open.

So tend the lamp.

Remain in His presence.

Allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate the lies you've borrowed and gently lead you back to the truth you must reclaim.

Because staying the course has never been about navigating calm waters.

It has always been about keeping your eyes fixed on the Light.
