Each military service member carries a unique story shaped by their experiences on the battlefield. Their tales of courage and sacrifice often leave lasting imprints on their lives. As a military spouse, I have come to understand that part of the healing process for these brave individuals lies in sharing their stories. It is through this sharing that we, as a community, can begin to understand and support them on their journey to renewed purpose and healing. In this article, I will delve into the importance of standing in the middle ground, supporting our loved ones, and finding solace in the faith that sustains us.
The Power of Connection: When I met a service member responsible for rescuing physically injured individuals during war, I found myself drawn to his eyes. They held a depth of pain that words alone could not express. In that moment, I made it my mission to let him know that his suffering was not invisible to me. I wanted to bridge the gap between the person he had become amidst the chaos of war and the person he used to be. It is within this middle ground that we discover the true struggles of our loved ones. Every military family must understand that, in order to find renewed purpose, they must grant others permission to stand alongside them.
The Journey of Standing in the Gap: During our encounter, I shared my husband and my own journey of standing in the gap for one another. The service member expressed his longing for his wife to comprehend his pain, to empathize and truly understand. I reminded him that my willingness to stand in the gap did not originate from my own strength alone. It began with God revealing to me that His love for my husband far surpasses my comprehension. God's revelation opened my heart, allowing me to embark on the journey back to my husband and, ultimately, to others who find themselves trapped in that middle space, fighting their battles alone.
The Selflessness and Courage of Support: Supporting our spouses, friends, and families who have experienced war or trauma requires immense selflessness. It is not about us; it is about them.
Standing in the gap demands courage and a commitment beyond our imagination. It is a long and arduous journey, filled with hardships. However, I can assure you that there is joy and peace to be found along the way—joy in witnessing healing and peace in relying on and seeking God's guidance.
As military families, we have the power to facilitate healing by standing in the middle ground, listening, empathizing, and offering unwavering support. Through shared experiences and faith, we can bridge the gap between the war-torn realities and the individuals who yearn to rediscover their purpose. Let us embrace the commitment to stand alongside our loved ones, knowing that the journey may be challenging, but the rewards of healing and renewed purpose are immeasurable. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our nation.
